STUDY IN HAWAI'I |

The School of Law is looking to gauge interest of La Trobe Students in a University of Hawaii Law School summer law program. This runs during our winter holidays - June 25 - Aug 7. Cost is at LOCAL RATES - approximately 680USD per credit hour (i.e. 1400 USD for a 2 credit hours class). Each two credit hour class will be recognised as one 15 credit class at La Trobe. Classes run in afternoons and evenings - therefore all classes could be taken in the evening (and you can enjoy Hawaii during the day). Classes available are: Ocean Law, Antitrust Law, Native Hawaiian Law, Consumer Law, Criminal Justice Law, Contract Drafting, Trusts & Estates Law, Ethics. Exams are August 6-8. Classes finish August 1 with SWOTVAC August 2-5. Accomodation available in halls of residence, ymca or private. This program will receive OS HELP loans plus a LTU mobility grant. This an excellent opportunity to study in a very well regarded and friendly university with a emphasis on meeting local students and social activities. Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship |
|

The Board of the Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship is now calling for applications for the 2012 internship. Graduates and final year students of Australian law schools who are 35 years old or younger and who have an interest or experience in one of the fields of law relevant to the work of the Hague Conference are encouraged to apply. Further information about the award and the selection criteria can be found on the websites of the AIIA and the ILA(AB).

The Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship was established in 2006 by the Australian Institute of International Affairs (the AIIA) and the International Law Association (Australian Branch) (theILA(AB)) in memory of the Hon Dr Peter Nygh AM, a graduate of the University of Sydney Law School and a former lecturer and professor in international law at the law school in the 1960s and 1970s. The award pays for a graduate or final year student of an Australian law school to travel to the Netherlands to undertake a 3-6 month unpaid internship at the Hague Conference of Private International Law and makes a contribution to the intern's living expenses while in the Hague.

Prior to taking the bar exam, students take bar review courses. These are intensive courses that run between 6-8 weeks.
Kaplan PMBR is a Kaplan Inc. company, an education institution with over 70 years of experience in training students for high stake exams and 30 years of experience in preparing students for the bar exam. In recognition of the hitherto low pass rates of foreign attorneys who sat for bar exams in the United States, Kaplan introduced a new course that caters to the difference in foreign legal education and US legal education. The Kaplan Complete course - is designed to prepare foreign graduates increase proficiency on the most highly tested areas of the bar exam before JD students start to study. This program gives you an early start by covering core knowledge tested on the bar (typically taken during the first year or second year of law school).
Kaplan Bar Review Prep Course specifics:
8 three-hour sessions with in-depth coverage of U.S. legal writing, analysis, and multiple-choice test-taking strategies You will build your knowledge of the 7 most heavily tested legal topics: Negligence, Contract Formation, 1st Amendment, Homicide, Hearsay, Landlord/ Tenant, and California CPLR
These courses give you a firm understanding of the core areas tested on the bar exam and a training on writing essays. It takes place over 8 weeks because learning over time increases the chances of retaining and recalling critical information during the exam. These are taken only once a week so as not to be a burden on your valuable time.
After you take the 8-week Fundamentals course, you will start the Complete course with the rest of the American JDs.
The Complete course includes:

La Trobe Law has entered into a scholarship arrangement with Houston Law School.
The arrangement recognizes the strength of the La Trobe LLM program and offers an outstanding opportunity for those of our graduates who wish to undertake an LLM in the USA where tuition fees in Tier 1 law schools are often around the USD50K mark.
During the summer semester, all students complete Introduction to American Law, Legal Skills and Strategies, American Business Law and American Criminal Law. Only foreign LL.M. students are enrolled in these courses. During the fall semester, students work with their advisor to choose from all of the regular law school courses. |

USA Nanotechnology Law |

Notice to all Law Students:
Places are available in the GBL class, USA Nanotech Law and Policy. This is a unique opportunity to differentiate you resume. This subject has never been taught in Australia before.
Nanotech Law is a “sunrise” IP subject, which means it an emerging field of law and you will be some of the first students to ever be taught in this subject in Australia let alone the world. There is little law in the area; however, a set of interesting policy issues arise.
This makes the class a nice elective to complete in your summer break, as there is no law you will only examine the policy and concepts.
This class will be taught by the former adviser to President Bush on Nanotech Law, Professor Vickie Sutton from Texas Tech Law School. No prerequisites are required.
If you have an interest in cutting edge IP law, then this unit is a “must do” subject. Assessment is by way of a take home exam.

Charlie Perkins Scholarships |

The Charlie Perkins Scholarships are now accepting applications for 2012.
Each year the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust offers two scholarships for Indigenous postgraduates to study at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge for up to three years.
The Perkins Trust website provides comprehensive information on the scholarship criteria, how to apply, key dates, etc.
Please note that the closing date for this year has been brought forward and applications will close on Friday 14th October 2011. The Charlie Perkins Scholarships will only be awarded to students who have been accepted to either the University of Oxford or Cambridge. In most instances, this will require a First Class Honours degree or a very strong Second Class Honours degree.
