We are delighted to announce that this years’ Annual Justice Speech, in conjunction with Leo Cussen Centre for Law, will be delivered by the Hon. Justice Chris Maxwell. Justice Maxwell, President of the Victorian Court of Appeal, will discuss the role of legal aid and advocacy skills, as well as his career within the legal profession. After the speech, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and meet the Justice.

The Honourable Justice Christopher Maxwell (BA (Hons), LLB (Melbourne), BPhil (Oxon) has been distinguished President of the Court of Appeal of the Victorian Supreme Court since July 2005. Justice Maxwell was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford in 1975 and then called to the Bar as a member of Lincoln’s Inn in 1978, practising briefly at the English Bar before returning to Melbourne in 1979.

From 1983 he was variously reader for Kenneth Hayne QC, Principal Private Secretary to Gareth Evans (Commonwealth Attorney-General), and reader for Ross Robson QC. He signed the Victorian Bar Roll in 1984 and became a QC in 1998. He has also acted in his distinguished career as the Victorian Legal Aid Commissioner for seven years and as a member of the Board of Liberty Victoria for six years, two of them as President.

We warmly welcome Students and Academics alike to join us on Wednesday August 10th at 4pm at Leo Cussen Centre for Law.  Please note that this event will be held in the CBD and that there will be an entrance cost of $10.
